Introduction

 

Occupational Safety and Health American Council (OSHAA) develop this training to provide trainers skills and knowledge required for an advanced first aid response, life support, management of casualty, the incident and other first aiders, in a range of situations, including in the home, workplace or within the community, until the arrival of medical or other assistance

Intended Audience

OSHAA designed this qualification for non-EMS responders including government, corporate, industry, lifeguards, security personnel, law enforcement, corrections personnel, and other individuals who are not EMS or healthcare providers, but desire or require certification in Advanced First Aid.

Each advancing level typically requires higher levels of experience, education, and knowledge and skills in leadership, business practices, safety and health, and communication and information technology. OSHAA wants to help our students who want to learn about these career opportunities.

Prerequisites

Current, valid professional-level BLS certification (Basic Life Support). May be incorporated / conducted in conjunction with the AFA program as needed.

Courses

To qualify for this program certificate, students must complete all required courses listed below. There is no time limit to complete the required courses.

  • Legal and other requirements
  • Basic Life Support (DRSABCD)
  • CPR and AED, including BVM
  • Abdominal injuries
  • Allergic reaction
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Bleeding and wound care
  • Burns, including thermal, chemical, friction and electrical
  • Cardiac conditions
  • Choking and airway obstruction
  • Seizures/Convulsions
  • Shock management
  • Stroke
  • Substance misuse
  • Vital Signs 

Course Standard

  • 30 hours course with flexible scheduling options
  • Includes CPR Level HCP
  • Provides you with a 3-year valid certification recognized in the workplace (you can take a short recertification session every 3 years)
  • Includes AED (Automated External Defibrillation) certification

Assessment

All assessment will be based on the principles of competency-based training and assessment. You will be assessed at the end of the course to show your instructor that you have an appropriate understanding of the procedures necessary to manage a life-threatening situation.
This will consist of:

  • 10 hours self paced workbook completed prior to attending class
  • Final Theory Assessment (during attendance of training)
  • Practical Demonstrations (during attendance of training)

  • Training Record Card
  • Free Course Certificate

Module Quiz

Each course is structured into modules, and at the conclusion of each module, there is a quiz intended to assist students in assessing their grasp of the course material. Once the student submits their quiz responses, they will receive the correct answers for review. Please note that quiz results are not stored and can be retaken multiple times.

Course Exam

Upon completing the course material and module quizzes, students have the opportunity to take the course exam. The course exam is specifically crafted to evaluate the students' comprehension of the course content. These exams consist of multiple-choice questions drawn from our comprehensive question bank.

Exam Characteristics

  • Students are allotted a two-hour timeframe to complete the course exam.
  • To pass the exam, you must attain a minimum score of 70%.
  • If you do not pass the exam, you have the option to retake it.
    • Students are permitted to take an exam a maximum of three (3) times within a 48-hour period.
    • Following the third attempt, students must wait for a 48-hour period before they can make another attempt at the exam. During this interval, it is recommended that students review the course material to enhance their comprehension.
  • After each exam, students will receive an email containing references (module and tab) to the content related to the questions they answered incorrectly. Students are strongly encouraged to review the course material associated with these references to enhance their understanding.
  • If you successfully pass the exam, you are not permitted to retake the exam to improve your score.
